Common Core Standards
Grade 7
Reading RI.7.1
Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
If you were to put this standard along with its Reading: Literature counterpart in a police lineup, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between them, so go on over there to check out what we have to say about this one. Just don't forget that we're talking about non-story stuff as opposed to, well, story stuff.
Example 1
Here's a lesson to use with any topic of your choosing.
Have students read and analyze a news article and answer questions based on comprehension knowledge. They will make inferences and highlight evidence in the text to support their answers.
