Common Core Standards
Grade 3
Writing W.3.3
Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
That's right. This is the creative writing standard. Narratives are simply stories, and if there's one thing kids love, it's telling stories. Whether it's how Aunt Janice got her underwear caught in the freezer, or how the kickball almost smacked an overhead plane, or how Sally really likes John, and that's why they she was chasing him around the playground...well, it doesn't matter. Storytelling is what we do as humans.
This standard simply feeds into the human need to tell stories, so use it to good effect.
