[Coop and Dino singing]

00:13

There's an old saying that goes something like this... [Book opens with old sayings]

00:16

“You can never be too prepared.”

00:18

And for the most part, it's true.

00:20

Going skydiving? [Man jumps out of a plane]

00:21

Better triple…no, quadruple check that the parachutes are ready to go.

00:25

Going camping for the week?

00:26

There's no such thing as too much preparation. [Woman swats a fly off her arm]

00:29

Just imagine a week in the forest without bug spray.

00:32

Unless you've ever wanted to see if your entire body can become one giant bug bite, we wouldn't [Girl running away from flies]

00:37

recommend it…

00:38

But here's the thing.

00:39

It's great to be prepared for your presentation.

00:41

Actually, scratch that – you should always be well-prepared for your presentation.

00:45

But if you're so prepared that you end up following your script word-for-word without [Girl reading a script]

00:49

paying attention to your surroundings, well, you might miss a few things…

00:53

…like that giant T-Rex wearing a bonnet.

00:55

And you wouldn't want to miss something that awesome.

00:57

Okay, fine, there's no t-rex in a bonnet. [Girl in the hall and teacher appears]

01:00

What we meant is you should always pay attention to your audience.

01:03

Seriously!

01:04

Even in your preparation process, you should prepare to do this! [Coop discussing how to present]

01:07

Why?

01:08

Think of the best speaker you know.

01:10

Maybe it's someone on television…or a member of your family…or even your favorite teacher. [Boy thinking of people who are good speakers]

01:14

Think of how that person engages their audience.

01:17

Chances are, they stand up straight, they speak clearly, and they use a variety of short and

01:22

long sentences.

01:23

But most importantly, they probably keep a watchful eye on their audience in order to [Dino discussing how to engage with the audience]

01:26

get a better sense of how everything is going.

01:29

Because what if you look out into your crowd and see that everyone looks downright confused? [Students looking confused]

01:33

Well, then you might need to slow down your pacing or try to explain things in a simpler way.

01:38

Or, if your audience looks super bored, then you'll probably want to speed things up and

01:42

get extra-dramatic in order to keep them interested.

01:45

Effective speakers change their presentation on the fly in order to meet the needs of the [Coop discussing how to be an effective speaker]

01:49

audience – and that's what you should try and do too!

01:52

And while we know this might sound a bit difficult – don't fret. [Girl playing an instrument on stage]

01:55

It'll all come naturally to you with enough practice.

01:58

And don't forget that human beings love to hear stories – which means that your audience [Old man telling a girl a story]

02:02

WANTS to hear what you have to say.

02:04

And if, no matter HOW hard you try, you can't seem to keep your audience from looking bored...

02:09

Well, that's when you get the hose out. [Water sprayed across students]

02:11

Sleepy now????

02:12

We didn't THINK so. [Students running after being sprayed with water]
