Figure Analysis
Wait, what? God doesn't make a single appearance in Song of Songs. Why are we giving him his own shout-out?
Well, we want to take a minute to remind ourselves how stinkin' weird this is. God is everywhere in the Bible. Even in later books when God stops coming down and smiting people, he's still all over the place. He is the most present and compelling figure of the whole series, and the fact that he's absent here is staggering.
Here's the thing. When God's around, he kind of steals the show. So maybe the writer wants us as readers to focus on the lovers and their families. Maybe, Shmoopers, this is just a straight-up love poem.
P.S. Bonus points if you remember that God is also missing from the Book of Esther.
