Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Some kids struggle with this well into high school, and the consequences are terribly frustrating for those students and their teachers. For some, it comes naturally, but practice is the golden ticket for this one. Teach kids to understand the basic sounds of words, and emphasize—and re-emphasize—sounding words out to figure them out. Then you'll have the praises of that child's subsequent teachers and the kid will thank you—though probably not literally.
