Common Core Standards
Grade 8
Language L.8.5
Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
While the previous Language standard was about the boring dictionary definitions of words, this standard is all about the funky ways they can come together to make up different meanings. In particular, this is what students should be focusing on:
1. Figures of speech. Figures of speech are super useful in describing stuff in new ways, even clichés. As they say, if you can't beat 'em, bring a longer weapon next time.
2. How words are related. There won't be any DNA testing involved, we promise.
3. The differing connotations between words. The connotation of a word might not seem that important, but it totally is. Think about how less seriously the Charge of the Light Brigade would be taken if it were called the "Bumrush of the Light Brigade."
There you have it. By the end of middle school, students should be able to use their words like a boss.
P.S. If your students need to brush up on their spelling and grammar, send 'em over to our Grammar Learning Guides so they can hone their skills before conquering the Common Core.
