By now, you've heard of Nigel Hayes. Do you know the name of the stenographer he was referring to? Of course you don't, because she's good at her job. (PS: Her name is Debra Bollman.) Have you ever heard the expression "the fly on the wall?" Well, as a stenographer, that's basically your job description.
A good stenographer is the one who people forget is even in the room. You'll likely be surrounded by people with a certain level of fame (or infamy, depending where you work), but if you do your job right, you're not going to be making the news any time soon.
However, if you do your job poorly, you might end up like Diane Reidy. She's a former stenographer in the U.S. House of Representatives, who decided, while Congress was voting, to take the microphone and give her own State of the Union. Ms. Reidy did succeed in bringing the Reps to rare moment of bipartisan agreement, when they all agreed to have her escorted from the building.
