Ship design is a lot of math, and the funny thing about people who know math is that they tend to think, well, mathematically. Go figure, right? But there can be a real beauty and creativity to be expressed through math by the right designer, and the people able to do that are likely to not only stick around the shipwright world, but actually excel at it.

There are a lot of positions out there for bread-and-butter buoyancy calculators—and they'll do just fine over the long haul—but the higher you climb up that nautical rope ladder, the more creativity you will need to ooze out between the calculations.
