Qualifications
Experience with demographic studies, journalism, statistic gathering, and political science (duh...) is a plus. Money know-how is another skill any good campaign manager can use (source). Otherwise, you might be hitch hiking your way to the Election Day rally. Speaking of transit, you may be asked to relocate for a new gig, and you'll definitely need an efficient mode of transportation (sorry, your segue isn't going to cut it).
Experience in the field is highly valued, so it's a good idea to start out early as a volunteer on campaigns, and work your way up from there (source). For example, if you have your heart set on the fertile breeding grounds of Washington, D.C., be willing to start small (maybe very small, as a lowly Capitol Hill office assistant) to get into the mix early.
