Thank you We sneak in Speak heavy subject matter I'll

ashman Is the heavy subject matter of the novel appropriate
- 00:14
for young teens It's a really tricky question Do you
- 00:20
write a novel that deals with rape because that's something
- 00:24
that teenagers you know need tto learn about and they
Full Transcript

need support with or do you try to protect them
- 00:31
because they're going to find out about it later on
- 00:34
in their lives books like theirs are often on dh
- 00:38
from school libraries for exactly this reason and books that
- 00:41
are nowhere near as graphic is this get banned from
- 00:44
school libraries twilight harry potter those get banned from libraries
- 00:49
and that reflects yeah a really impulse to hide things
- 00:53
hoping that no one will ever find out No i
- 00:57
never really a fan of censorship but i especially think
- 01:00
in this day and age it just seems as though
- 01:03
there's so much material out there not just for teenagers
- 01:06
with young kids that people are going to have to
- 01:10
deal with serious and weighty topics earlier than you might
- 01:13
expect And the great thing about writing about this novel
- 01:17
is that it gives them the chance to deal with
- 01:19
these things in a really nuanced way So instead of
- 01:24
just watching a movie where there's you know a really
- 01:27
violent scene you get to see a year in melinda's
- 01:30
life where she's dealing with the impact of that violence
- 01:35
A book can also sometimes be less intense in a
- 01:38
way that like you don't always pause a movie while
- 01:40
you're watching it If you're in a movie theater you
- 01:42
can't posit You can put down a book when it's
- 01:46
too much So i think that's really useful actually for
- 01:50
young people to be able to absorb these things sort
- 01:53
of bit by bit by bit a book is something
- 01:56
you can talk about with other people So it's helpful
- 01:58
in that way and the most important reason is just
- 02:02
you know the whole idea behind this novel is that
- 02:04
melinda feels so alone on there are really people who
- 02:08
feel very alone because of the things that they've experienced
- 02:11
So it's Just a useful to have these books as
- 02:13
something that people can go to to know that like
- 02:18
their situation is not totally unique and that there's help
- 02:22
and support and a future for them Is the heavy 00:02:28.48 --> [endTime] subject matter of the novel appropriate for young teens
