Religious Tolerance in Colonial America, a la Shmoop.

00:13

AMERICA! FOUNDED ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM!

00:18

Or was it all just a lie?

00:22

A marketing ploy like the ones realtors use to sell real estate? Let's take a look.

00:26

Pilgrims wanted the freedom to practice their religion,

00:29

but persecuted anyone who practiced other religions.

00:33

However, they weren't the first Pilgrims in North America.

00:36

French Protestants had already established a colony in Florida.

00:40

The Spanish soon established a Catholic fort

00:42

and then proceeded to wipe the French off the map.

00:47

There were a few early voices of reason.

00:50

John Wise thought that religion corrupted government.

00:53

But he thought government corrupted religion, too.

00:55

When the colonies of Rhode Island, Maryland,

00:57

and Pennsylvania were founded, religious tolerance was built into their charters.

01:02

Like people buying that Gotye single on iTunes...

01:04

...everyone else had to jump on the bandwagon. All the new colonies opted for religious tolerance.

01:11

But there were still a bunch of mixed-up laws throughout the country.

01:14

Like in Massachusetts, where only Christians could hold public office...

01:18

...and if they were Catholic, they had to renounce the pope to do so.

01:23

New York banned Catholics from public office.

01:26

In Maryland, Jews didn't have full civil rights.

01:30

James Madison eventually argued for complete separation of church and state.

01:35

Thomas Jefferson embraced freedom, checking an item off his bucket list.

01:40

What do you think? Were we founded on religious freedom?

01:45

Or was Separation of Church and State simply a reaction to colonial intolerance?

01:53

Shmoop amongst yourselves.
