Acceptance of Differences
- 00:05
a la Shmoop
- 00:06
All right, suppose you've got two cups. [man pouring coffee for himself and a friend in two different colored cups]
- 00:08
You're hanging out with a friend and you offer her a drink.
Full Transcript
- 00:11
You give her a green cup and take a blue one
- 00:13
for yourself. But your friend has an issue
- 00:16
with her cup. She doesn't think green cups
- 00:18
are as good as blue cups. [friend refusing to have coffee in the green cup]
- 00:19
You don't see what the big deal is. Coffee is coffee.
- 00:22
But your friend refuses to drink out of it and says
- 00:25
if you keep the cup, she won't feel comfortable
- 00:27
associating with you.
- 00:28
Whoa, sounds pretty ridiculous, right?
- 00:30
It's not like the cup had any influence in the way it was made or [a green cup in a factory]
- 00:33
the way it was made was bad or anything.
- 00:35
Well, now, replace those cups with people.
- 00:38
See where we're going with this? Yeah,
- 00:40
we're pretty sneaky, huh?
- 00:41
Gender, race, sexual orientation,
- 00:44
religion, political views.
- 00:46
They're all sorts of viewpoints that
- 00:48
may differ from our own, and that's terrifying, right? [few papers pinned on a bulletin board]
- 00:51
Well, it doesn't have to be. Here's the thing.
- 00:53
We have no reason to fear these differences.
- 00:55
If anything, we should embrace them.
- 00:56
Heck, life would be pretty dull if we all agreed
- 00:58
about everything all the time.
- 01:00
Call us crazy, but we like some good, healthy conflict
- 01:02
once in a while. [two men talking about their favorite super hero]
- 01:03
And even with all our differences, we have one important thing in common.
- 01:06
We're all human.
- 01:07
If you prick us, do we not bleed?
- 01:09
If you poison us, do we not die?
- 01:11
If you tickle us, do we not laugh?
- 01:14
Heh. Yeah. That Shakespeare, he's pretty good. [Shakespeare impressed by the man's words]
- 01:16
We tend to gravitate towards the familiar
- 01:18
because it's safe. People who aren't
- 01:20
like us, well, they're the ones we have to watch out for.
- 01:23
After all, this guy probably has a bomb
- 01:25
strapped to his chest, right? [man holding a bowling ball]
- 01:26
And this guy's definitely carrying a gun, right?
- 01:29
And if you let these two get too close
- 01:31
to your kids, chances are they'll infect them, right?
- 01:35
Or could it be that you're just narrow-minded and judgmental? [two men on TV talking to each other]
- 01:37
Watching too much TV from the 1970s, hmm?
- 01:40
If you let your prejudices run your life,
- 01:42
they're gonna lead to you missing out
- 01:44
on a whole bunch of rewarding relationships.
- 01:46
Because this terrifying guy?
- 01:48
He actually shares your love of vintage cars,
- 01:50
horror movies, and soccer. [man enjoying vintage cars, movie and a game of soccer]
- 01:52
Sounds like the basis of good friendship to us.
- 01:54
The bottom line is that we're all sharing this
- 01:56
giant rock floating in a galaxy that's
- 01:58
far too big and complicated for any of us to
- 02:00
really understand.
- 02:01
And if you think about how improbable it is
- 02:03
that you're sitting wherever you are watching this video, [woman watching a Shmoop video on her computer]
- 02:05
and we mean really improbable.
- 02:07
Your parents had to find each other.
- 02:09
Their parents had to find each other, and so on and so forth
- 02:12
up a generation.
- 02:13
It's kind of a miracle that any of us is actually here.
- 02:16
And remember, we're on this planet for basically a millisecond [boy celebrating his birthday and wishing he was older]
- 02:18
in the grand scheme of things. Why waste it
- 02:20
spreading intolerance and hate?
- 02:22
So our advice, not that you're asking for it -
- 02:24
Go out there and talk to someone you normally wouldn't.
- 02:26
You might be surprised at what they have to offer.
- 02:28
Because if we're all sharing this big, beautiful rock [man and a woman holding a globe together]
- 02:30
for a millisecond, well, we might as well like the people we're sharing it with.
- 02:33
