Developing Relationships
MoreRelationships Across the School System
Building relationships across the school system is a unique brand of adventure. We’re talking about your co-workers yes, but co-workers who hardly get the opportunity to speak to each other. You only get to see each other when it’s the beginning of the year and the entire school system is together to hash out the latest test scores.
Or, like, sometimes at lunch.
Doesn’t sound like the greatest environment for forging lasting friendships.
Still. That doesn't mean you can neglect these relationships. The relationships that you build, whether in different departments or central offices, are the relationships you can call upon when you have burning question or are looking to move up through the ranks.
Here are some tips to get you started.
1. Be friendly and engaging.
You can’t underestimate something as simple as, “How are you?” or “Nice to see you again.” Don’t be insincere, but strive for genuine pleasure at seeing someone you haven’t seen in a while. Even if you’re not that pleased, it doesn’t hurt to be polite…usually.
2. Don't shoot the messenger.
If someone has to break bad news or tell you something you do not want to hear, it’s best not to go off the deep end. Folks at Central Office have feelings, too. And there’s no quicker way to tank a relationship than to degrade another person. So remember: don’t shoot the messenger. Understanding that the deliverer isn’t the bad guy can help save your skin down the line.
3. Be honest in all your dealings.
People automatically respect folks who have lots of integrity. Keep all of your dealings above board, and you will automatically gain gobs of respect. And guess what? With respect comes good relationships.
4. Don’t do anything stupid.
Seriously. Keep the school system out of the national news.
