How do you use Shmoop?
Sometimes I use discussion questions, sometimes I direct students to the page to find themes they haven't discovered on their own, and often I show them the "advice" emails for kicks!
What's your favorite Shmoop product and why?
Learning Guides, because they replace CliffsNotes from the days of old.
Shmoop is young, hip, and extremely brilliant. Our words, not his.
What is the coolest experience you've had using Shmoop?
Revealing themes from literature using a projector after class discussion. [Students] were amazed that I wasn't just making things up, that peers and experts were actually thinking alike. They also appreciate "speaking their language."
What was the last book that made you laugh out loud?
The last book that made me laugh out loud was Twain's Roughing It. He was describing overland coach travel and I was on a plane.
Time flies… and so does Mr. Ochs.
The nicest thing a student has ever said to/done for you?
The nicest thing a student ever said to/about me was actually in response to her mother, during a parent/teacher meeting. She said, "He makes us think!" The student thought it was a pretty good complaint!
Think, think, and think some more. Keep making them think and Shmoop, Mr. Ochs.
