Duh. In fact, it's double that. And yet many people seem to view it as a derogatory term. "I'm not a feminist, but..." is a common way for someone to begin a sentence in which they argue for equal rights for women. Which is pretty much what feminism is all about. So why the disconnect? 

In the last 100 years, the women's movement has won many major victories, and yet many women who support the principles and objectives of the movement are uneasy about identifying themselves as feminists or "women's libbers." You might want to explore this with your students. Is this because the movement has pursued too extreme an agenda? Or is it because its opponents have succeeded in hanging a set of negative associations on the movement?
