Character Analysis
Educated in England, Hamidullah is a kind of mentor to Aziz in the novel. A Muslim like Aziz, Hamidullah is married to a woman who happens to be Aziz's distant relative. As the leading Muslim lawyer in Chandrapore, Hamidullah is also one of the more prominent Indians, and works on numerous committees with Indians of all faiths to work toward an independent India. Hamidullah represents the educated, progressive, Indian individual, who is committed to using political means, not armed rebellion, to agitate for Indian independence.
