How we cite our quotes: (verse)
Quote #1
"In a Station of the Metro" (title)
The title is really part of the poem. Without the title, it would be impossible to know where the poem takes place. The title contains a reference to a symbol of modern technology, the metro. On the other hand, we don’t find this reference anywhere else in the poem. In this way, technology is "excluded" from the vision of the poem itself. The poem is not really about modernization; or, at least, not about modernization as most writers have portrayed it – as a bleak, scary force that turns people into workaholic zombies. The poem shows how the imagination proves to be the more powerful force when faced with the technologies of modern life.
