Esmeralda

Esmeralda kind of fits the damsel-in-distress job description, but her plotline is more complex than that: she's not just there to be rescued. It's not surprising that the most beautiful character in the novel is the center of a lot of sexual tension, but it's also what ends up causing a lot of the book's drama. Esmeralda's a strong character, but the drama she inadvertently unleashes is so fantastic that even she can't get herself out of it.
