Imperialism: The Political Strawman
Imperialism: The Political Strawman
In this corner, we have the representative for the Republican Party. One time heavyweight champion here to defend his title and show the world how strong America can be. He's William "the Warhawk" McKinley.
And in this corner, we have the representative for the Democratic Party, coming back to try and reclaim the heavyweight title for the second time. It's William "the Peacemaker" Bryan.
You can almost imagine the crowds roaring for these two brawlers…
Bryan was in the middle of a fight for the presidential office. He gave his "Imperialism" speech at the Democratic Convention where he was being nominated as the Democratic pick for president.
And if you've ever witnessed a presidential election, you know this stuff can get nasty.
Bryan was no different. The speech is just jam-packed with all sorts of mean things regarding the Republican Party. He calls them greedy. Infers that they are evil. Accuses them of being monarchists.
Here are a few keepers:
[…] the Republican party is dominated by those influences which constantly tend to substitute the worship of mammon for the protection of the rights of man. (3)
[…] the Republican convention adopted a platform the larger part of which was devoted to boasting and self-congratulation. (11)
Why does the republican party hesitate to legislate upon the Philippine question? Because a law would disclose the radical departure from history and precedent contemplated by those who control the republican party. (50)
Yeah. Bryan was blaming the Republican Party for everything.
But if you think about it, wasn't blaming one political party for everything a little too simple? If it was up to Bryan, he would probably blame the explosion of the USS Maine on the Republican Party. He would probably blame the last recession on the Republican Party. He definitely would have blamed the fact that the Tooth Fairy doesn't exist on the Republican Party.
Is that fair? Not really. Is it normal for politics? Yeah.
