Character Role Analysis

Marla Singer

Besides Chloe, the lusty woman dying of brain parasites, Marla Singer is the only female character with a name. Shucks: the creators were so generous they even gave her a last name.

Marla and our narrator have a love/hate relationship, and by love/hate, we mean that the Tyler side of our narrator loves her, the Jack/narrator side hates her, and poor Marla doesn't know what to think. She tells him over the phone near the end:

MARLA: You f*** me, then snub me. You love me, you hate me. You show me your sensitive side, then you turn into a total asshole.

That's the most accurate assessment of this guy ever.

Only by reconciling the two halves of his identity (by "killing" the Tyler side) does our main character realize he does love Marla. The last scene of the film is the two of them holding hands. Awww. Maybe Fight Club is just a romance after all?
