Character Role Analysis
Tyler Durden
No one said a guy couldn't mentor himself, especially if the guy in question has a split personality. (Check what we said about "action" as Characterization.) See, our main character doesn't actually do anything, but somewhere, deep down in his subconscious, he knows exactly what he wants to do, and that's overthrow society. Simple, right?
Not so fast. Society is a little heavy to throw around all by your lonesome. A guy needs help. So our main character creates a mentor in the form of Tyler Durden. Tyler explains it best near the end of the movie, when it's revealed that our main character and Brad Pitt's Tyler are the same person:
TYLER: All the ways you wish you could be, that's me. I look like you wanna look, I f*** like you wanna f***, I am smart, capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways that you are not.
If you don't want to be like anyone else and you just want to be an amazing version of yourself, what better mentor could there be than…yourself?
