While the plots of the stories in Dubliners are generally easy to follow, and there aren't too many characters in any single story, trying to remember the details of all fifteen stories and fit them together makes for a strenuous climb. References to 19th-century Irish politics and complex internal dialogues don't make that work any easier. Trust your gut, though. The real impact of Dubliners, like most of its action, takes place in the mind and in the heart, and if you're a bit rusty on Irish history, it probably won't hold you back much.
