Reading RF.K.2.C

Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.

The onset is the first consonant or cluster of consonants in a word (so not all words have it). Then, the end sound(s) of a word is the rime, and consists of the vowel and consonants that follow the onset. This substandard asks students to both break words down into their sounds and combine clusters of sounds. If a student sees the word cat, they should distinguish the /c/ from the /at/ and be able to put those sounds back together.
