Common Core Standards
Grade 1
Reading RF.1.3
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
First graders are still learning the ropes of their vowels, consonants, and even those pesky consonant digraphs.
They don't need to know what a consonant digraph is (we won't judge you if you had to Google that, too), but they do need to know how to spell those babies. Along with breaking words into syllables and knowing common vowel teams, first graders should be reading first-grader texts with sufficient fluency, even if it means going back and doing a little rereading.
