Common Core Standards
Grade 1
Reading RF.1.1.A
Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation).
First graders should already know the very basic organization of print—words go left to right, top to bottom, and page by page—so make sure they definitely know some of these finishing touches before heading to second grade. A sentence isn't truly a sentence without a capital letter to start it off and some punctuation to know it's over with.
