Glory
What would the world be like without bowls? And dishes? And pots? In a word, it'd be messy. We'd have to eat straight off the table and we'd have nowhere to put our geraniums. Pottery is one of the oldest human crafts, and one of the most important. It's right up there with sheep herding and the invention of fire.
Aside from continuing a millennia-old craft and keeping humanity from regressing into slovenly savagery, pottery can inject beauty and fun into the most mundane things. Who doesn't love a funny mug, or a pretty serving platter loaded up with pigs in blankets? This is useable art, people. It doesn't just hang on a wall or sit in a shelf—it's there to be interacted with and enjoyed.
Picasso once said that "art washes away from the soul the dust of daily life" (source). Literally dozens of people might wash the dust from their souls simply by drinking their coffee from the Mickey Mouse mug you made them. Everyone wants a less dusty soul. Just ask around—they'll tell you.
