Odds of Hanging On
How do we say this politely? You probably shouldn't be writing poetry for any reason other than that you really love writing poetry. If you wind up getting published, there's still no way to ensure that your book will be successful. If it's successful, there's no guarantee it'll sell well. And even if it does sell well, who knows if you'll be able to replicate that success again.
Your best bet is to find a residence or professorship position teaching poetry at a college or university. This way you can stay immersed in the arts and continue thinking about poetry on a daily basis, without actually having to have any success at all.
