Glory
Even if it doesn't seem like it on the average day, the things you do in the course of this profession will end up saving lives. It doesn't matter whether you catch a restaurant that would have given food poisoning to their patrons, or find faulty wiring on a new high-rise development's elevator, both the health and the safety parts of the job make it worth doing.
That's important to remember when basically nobody gives a hoot. When you do your job right, people stay safe and healthy, and you're flying under the radar. No one says thank you when a mine doesn't collapse or an airplane doesn't crash, but that's just the nature of your job. You'll have to settle for knowing that what you did matters―even if everyone else is too preoccupied to notice.
