Odds of Getting In
College counseling is a great career choice for two reasons. First, there are lots of kids in high school in this country, and that population isn't going to shrink anytime soon.
Second, American society has adopted the idea that kids who want to be successful in life should go to college—and not just any old college, but the most prestigious college possible.
In a lot of ways, this idea is complete and utter nonsense, and one of your tasks as a college counselor will be to push high school kids who may not be college material towards other educational and employment opportunities that are a better fit. However, because so many Americans have bought into the college ideal hook, line, and sinker, you're never going to have a shortage of people clamoring for your help.
Keep in mind, however, that your employer is likely going to be a school district, and school districts nowadays are infamous for not having the money they'd need to hire an awesome college counselor like you. Thus, your job search may be limited to those districts that actually have the money to fund a college counselor position.
