Power

You've noticed the effect of environmental stimuli on a controlled population of snakes and have guessed that recent large-scale construction in Maine might be killing off the species. High five.

You have the power to contact the local government with the authority of an expert. You can petition for a thorough study into the ongoing environmental effects of industrial expansion. If successful, you could save an entire species from becoming endangered or worse. That's the sort of power you can expect to have in this job.

Of course, conversely, you also have the power to not say anything, and in so doing allow the local ecosystem to decay imperceptibly over time, and then take your place as one of the most subtle yet convoluted super villains of all time.

It's unlikely that you'll influence pop culture or convince the president to go to war with Canada...but you will have a shot at creating medicines that save lives, or to protect what you know to be an incredibly fragile natural balance. And if you're the sort who really cares about this stuff, then that's real power.
