Fame
In times of disaster, fame goes to those in the field—first responders and volunteers, for example—who demonstrate outstanding bravery or commit acts of heroism. Little recognition, let alone fame, goes to the "bean counters" in the background calling the shots out of their emergency planning-and-response playbooks. Unless things go horribly wrong, in which case your boss (as the director and main shot-caller) gets the lumps.
As you can imagine, what's bad for your boss may just end up bad for you in the long run. Your best bet is to do everything you can to make your boss look good, and even though you won't get your name in the papers, you'll be a hero in your boss' eyes and have a better chance of getting a glowing recommendation from him or her when you apply for a director position elsewhere.
