Involvement in community... a la Shmoop.
- 00:07
Let's start with the basics... what is a community?
- 00:11
It's really just a group of people. They might live in the same place, or share a specific
- 00:15
value or common characteristic, but bottom line?
- 00:18
A community is humans interacting with other humans.

Like in this picture. Aw… what a nice little community.
- 00:24
Now where are you in this photo? Are you one of these fine upstanding community members,
- 00:29
always ready to lend a helping hand?
- 00:31
…You’ve got to be here somewhere…
- 00:32
Oh wait. There you are. In the back corner there. Let's zoom in.
- 00:36
Yup. Goofing off and picking your nose.
- 00:39
Last we checked, that doesn’t help anyone. And you might be thinking, “So what? Why
- 00:43
should I be involved?”
- 00:44
And maybe you're right. If you don't need anything from your community, then why should
- 00:48
you give anything to your community?
- 00:50
Well, that’s where we come in.
- 00:52
The problem is that the next time you ask your neighbor to borrow some eggs, or their
- 00:55
vacuum, or their garden gnome, or their fireplace, chances are you're going to be out of luck.
- 01:00
Anyway.
- 01:01
Ultimately, a community is what you make of it. The act of contributing to a community
- 01:05
is exactly what makes a community.
- 01:08
No contribution, no community.
- 01:10
And if you’re still scratching your head and thinking, “So what?”, think of it
- 01:14
this way: contributing to the community is kind of like making a movie.
- 01:17
There are a lot of individual parts that need to exist…screenwriter, director, producer, actors…
- 01:23
But if even one person doesn’t pull their weight, there's really no movie to be had.
- 01:27
Seriously. Can you picture The Lord of the Rings without the fellowship?
- 01:30
It would literally be a bunch of shots of New Zealand.
- 01:33
Not exactly an epic tale for the ages. And sure, your community isn’t exactly The
- 01:37
Lord of the Rings, but you still have to do your fair share.
- 01:40
If you help your neighbor clean out her gutters, maybe she'll give you her top-secret apple
- 01:44
pie recipe.
- 01:45
And if you offer to do some last-minute babysitting for the couple down the street? Maybe their
- 01:49
son will give you a few free guitar lessons.
- 01:51
Basically, put in enough time and dedication to your community, and you may be able to
- 01:55
borrow that fireplace after all…
- 01:56
Much to the dismay of your entire community.
