[Coop and Dino singing]

00:14

When you first heard about video learning, it might have sounded like a dream come true! [Man teaching video learning]

00:18

No more books or writing or anything like that.

00:20

Just sitting down with a screen and some popcorn…like a trip to the movies.

00:24

Well, not so fast. [Boy watching screen and Man appears]

00:26

Video learning can be fun, sure!

00:28

But it's pretty different from going to the movies.

00:30

And not just because it doesn't come with a sound system that could cause short-term [Sound system vibrating]

00:33

hearing loss.

00:34

That's because with video learning, you're trying to actually learn something.

00:37

Hence the name. [Coop discussing video learning]

00:38

When you go to the movies or watch TV, it's okay to kinda space out…it doesn't really

00:43

matter if you miss one song in The Little Mermaid. [Man zoning out while watching a movie]

00:45

With video learning, though, you've gotta keep your mind active, thinking about what

00:48

you're seeing and trying to make connections to stuff you already know. [Man with brain for a head working out]

00:51

Definitely not the typical couch potato experience.

00:54

Before you even watch the video, it's a good idea to think about what you know about the

00:58

subject.

00:59

If you do that, you'll probably end up with a whole list of questions about the subject

01:02

that you want answered…

01:04

…and if you watch the video with those questions in mind, you're much more likely to find the [Boy watching video of coop]

01:08

answers.

01:09

After all, those questions aren't going to appear in your head magically just because

01:13

you pressed "Play." [Arm extends out of monitor and gives boy questions]

01:14

Internet video might be good, but it's not quite that good.

01:17

Say for example you knew that you were going to be watching a video about elephants.

01:21

Being a smart kid, you already know a thing or two about elephants, but maybe you don't [Elephant walking around and boy appears]

01:25

quite know why their trunks are so long.

01:28

So if you ask yourself the question, "Why do elephants have such long trunks?" before

01:32

watching the video… [Boy scribbles down a question]

01:33

…you're more likely to latch onto the answer if it comes up.

01:36

Which is good for you, though maybe not so great for those elephants that like to keep

01:41

a bit of mystery in their lives.

01:42

So even though video learning might be a little more strenuous than regular ol' video watching, [Boy thinking about brain exercising]

01:47

it's pretty rewarding!

01:48

Of course…we kind of have to say that…y'know…

01:51

comes with the whole, "educational video" territory.

01:54

And who knows?

01:55

Maybe your teacher will even let you pop some popcorn! [popcorn popping]

01:57

Which we totally expect you to share with us. [Arm reaches for boys popcorn]
