Character Role Analysis
Pooh, again (to Christopher Robin)
As an added dimension to his character, while Pooh is often a leader, and has his very own sidekick in Piglet (see below), he also plays the role of little buddy to Christopher Robin, our guide and mentor. In his very own boat, no less! When he comes up with the idea of floating in an umbrella, here's what Milne calls the invention: "the good ship, The Brain of Pooh (Captain, C. Robin; 1st Mate, P.Bear)" (Winnie-the-Pooh.9.86.). And at the very, very end, Winnie the Pooh gets knighted as "'Sir Pooh de Bear, most faithful of all my Knights'" (House.10.49).
Piglet (to Pooh)
Piglet is the only other animal mentioned in the Introduction to Winnie-the-Pooh, and we're told about him as being little, and a wee bit jealous. Another way of looking at it is that he looks up to Pooh. He's the one who allows Pooh to be a leader and a guide himself.
For most of the tales, Piglet tends to follow Pooh's direction: tracking footprints in the snow, catching a Heffalump, building a house for Eeyore, and on and on. And when Piglet is scared? Well, he sidles up next to Pooh and tells him, "'I just wanted to be sure of you'" (House.7.91). Piglet feels most himself when he's attached to Pooh. That's some serious adorableness.
