- Thérèse remains in Saint Ouen overnight, while Laurent takes a cab to Michaud's house. Michaud is having dinner with Olivier and Suzanne.
- Laurent tells Michaud about Camille's "accident," and asks Michaud to help him break the bad news to Mme Raquin.
- They all go with Laurent to the haberdashery shop. Much to Laurent's relief, Michaud says it's probably better for Laurent to let him speak to Mme Raquin alone.
- Mme Raquin is devastated by her son's death.
- Suzanne does her best to comfort the woman.
- The next morning, Laurent accompanies Thérèse back to the Passage du Pont Neuf. The two hardly speak on the journey back.
