Antagonist
Character Role Analysis
Camille
Spoiled and selfish, Camille is a typical antagonist. His sickly nature makes him unattractive, and Thérèse in particular finds him to be completely pathetic. Lucky for her, she's married to the dude.
Dead-Camille has a far greater impact than Living-Camille. His ghost is the source of Thérèse and Laurent's horrific hallucinations. He appears in their bedroom, in the form of the cat François, and in every canvas Laurent paints.
Camille's ghostly presence casts an overwhelming shadow of dread over Thérèse and Laurent. It can even be said that the memory of Camille's death is what ultimately drives Thérèse and Laurent to commit suicide. Camille's ghost-presence must be made of powerful stuff.
