How we cite our quotes: Citations follow this format: (Scene.Line). Every time a character talks counts as one line, even if what they say turns into a long monologue.

The Captain, like many of his political counterparts, only has faith in practical things. He leaves religious matters to the Church.

THE ARCHBISHOP: "Miracles are not frauds because they are often – I do not say always – very simple and innocent contrivances by which the priest fortifies the faith of his flock." (2.107)
Here's a priest saying that most miracles are bogus. He thinks it's OK, though, because, even if they're hoaxes, they lead people to God. We wonder if he's more concerned with people's souls or in maintaining the power of the Church.
