When we divide 6 into 5, we see a repeating 3 in the quotient of 0.83333333…
When we write this as a decimal, we can put a bar over the first 3 to show that it continues forever. But when we then convert it to a percent by moving the decimal to the right two places, we just round the percent to 83%.
Example 2
Convert to a percent.
7 divided by 10 is 0.7. Since we don't have enough numbers to move the decimal to the right two places, we can tack on a zero, giving us 70%.
Example 3
Convert to a percent.
To convert this mixed number to a decimal, we leave the 3 in the ones place to the left of the decimal. Then we divide 1 by 4 to get 0.25.
Add the 3 back in, and our decimal version is 3.25.
To convert 3.25 to a percentage, slide the decimal point to the right two places.
