The contrast between the world occupied by Sybil and Seymour and that of the adults in the story (Mrs. Carpenter, Muriel, and Muriel's mother) is rather blunt. These women are obsessed with frivolous matters like fashion or appearances or food or drink; Sybil and Seymour are unbothered by these materialistic trivialities.
