Other People

Seeing as the most famous line in No Exit (and arguably in Sartre’s literary writing) is "hell is other people," it‘s clear that the abstract notion of "other people" is the antagonist. Other people antagonize an individual with their presence because they compete for subjectivity and reduce that individual to a mere object under their gaze. You’ve heard us say that a million times because it’s such an important part of this play.
