• Matt is created in a lab and is given to Celia, who raises him in her home near the Big House.
• When Matt is seven, he's discovered by Emilia, Steven, and María.
• This is when he learns he's a clone of El Patrón.
• He's taken to the Big House and is held in captivity by Rosa.
• When he's finally freed and returned to Celia, he is also given a bodyguard named Tam Lin.
• The Alacráns all hate Matt, but he makes a friend in María.
• Matt develops a relationship with El Patrón while struggling to find his place in the world as a clone.
• Matt gets blamed for killing María's dog, Furball.
• Later, Matt has a close call when El Patrón nearly dies, though he doesn't realize it until later.
• Celia begins to poison Matt to protect him from having his organs harvested.
• More time passes and Matt is now fourteen.
• El Patrón keels over at Steven and Emilia's wedding. María tries to help Matt escape, but they are captured.

• Matt makes new friends and helps lead an uprising against the cruel guards. He finally escapes with his new friends and makes it to San Luis.
• He goes to the convent where María has been living and meets María's mother, who tells him things have changed in Opium and that he must go back.
• Matt then returns to Opium. He learns that El Patrón killed nearly everyone after Matt left, including Tam Lin.
• A grieving Matt takes over the country and decides to fix things there.
