Character Analysis
Mr. Thomas owns a small farm and gives Tom, Timothy, and Wilkie work digging a ditch. Mr. Thomas is a good man, and he hates how corrupt the Farmer's Association (run by the bank of the West) is and how they are treating migrant workers. He wishes he could pay the men more money, but if he does not abide by the rules and laws set forth by the Farmer's Association, he won't get the loan that he desperately needs to keep his farm working.
