Teresa (Juana) Panza Timeline and Summary

  • Teresa is named Juana in Part 1 of Don Quixote. She doesn't' show up until the very end, but we can imagine that throughout all of Part 1, she hasn't been impressed by Sancho taking off and leaving her alone with the kids.
  • She's angry with Sancho when he returns—but also pleased with the bag of a hundred gold pieces he brings back with him.
  • When Sancho says he's going to head out again with Don Quixote, Teresa tells him this is a bad idea. According to her, it's better if the entire Panza family just knows its place and remains a bunch of humble country folk.
  • When Teresa receives word of the fact that Sancho has actually been made a governor, she jumps for joy and totally throws away all her earlier talk about staying humble. Now that she feels she has wealth in her grasp, she's more than happy to act the part.
  • Teresa sends Sancho a letter telling him how happy she is and how soon she'd like to come see him. But as a fine lady, she demands to travel in a coach.
  • When Sancho finally gets home from all of his adventures, he tells Teresa that he gave up his role as governor. We're left to imagine how that's going to go over.
