Character Role Analysis

Ezeulu

Ezeulu is the main character. His actions or reactions drive the plot. Though we like Ezeulu and sympathize with him, he is something of an anti-hero. Like Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye, who fights to keep kids from growing up so they can maintain their innocence, we recognize something pure and true in Ezeulu's desire to keep his people on the straight and narrow path of Igbo cultural norms and spiritual truths. Nevertheless, we also recognize that maybe he has some control issues, and that he is fighting a losing battle. Ironically, he contains the seeds of his own destruction within himself.
