In one sense, the antagonist in the novel is space itself, that final frontier; the big vast expanse that humans have to crawl across to reach their evolutionary destiny. All that inanimate emptiness is summed up by poor old Hal, though, the killer computer who just wants to tell the truth. And the truth is DEATH!
