"You were always on my mind."

Little things I should have said and done—
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Context

This line is from the song "Always on My Mind," sung by Elvis Presley, written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James (1972).

Though Elvis Presley didn't write the song "Always on the My Mind," he was the first big star to record and release it. The timing was pretty interesting, since he recorded it just a few weeks after he separated from his wife of five years, Priscilla.

The song is all about a man who is really regretting the fact that he never took the chance to let the woman he loved know how appreciated she was. He never did the little things to show her how special she was to him. But this song is supposed to let her know that, even when it seemed like he didn't care, she was always on his mind. Awww.

Unfortunately, Elvis and Priscilla divorced the next year, but they remained close friends throughout the rest of their lives. Hey, you can't win them all, even with a good song.

Where you've heard it

The phrase "always on my mind" is pretty cliché now, and you'll hear it anytime people are talking about someone who they think of often. But really, if someone were always on your mind you wouldn't get a lot of other thinking done, would you?

Willie Nelson did another great cover version of this song.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

There's nothing pompous about telling someone they're always on your mind. Heck, it's kind of sweet. Go ahead and let the whole party know!
