"The officer nodded, as if a question had been answered."
Squirming a little, conscious of his filthy appearance, Ralph answered shyly.
"Hullo."
The officer nodded, as if a question had been answered.
Context
The last chapter of Lord of the Flies has the boys being discovered by British officers.
When they find the boys, they can't be sure if they're "savages" or "civilized" people—and the answer comes when Ralph opens his mouth to speak British English.
Yeah, we're still not convinced.
Where you've heard it
You probably haven't heard this quote anywhere—it's not a super quotable one—but, sadly, the sentiment is pretty universal. Biases based on how people talk are everywhere. Here are a few studies to back it up.
- "Why The Brain Doubts a Foreign Accent"
- "'You Lost Me at Hello': How and when accent-based biases are expressed and suppressed"
- "Employers show bias against accents, study says"
Given the things the boys have done over the past twelve chapters, we're not so sure it's true in this case.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
Judging someone based on their accent? Yeah, kinda pretentious.
