Speaker: Don Vito Corleone
"Someday, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me."
Someday, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, accept this justice as a gift on my daughter's wedding day.
Context
This famous line is spoken by Don Vito Corleone, played by Marlon Brando, to Amerigo Bonasera, played by Salvatore Corsitto, in The Godfather (directed by Francis Ford Coppola, 1972).
Most dads might get their daughter a KitchenAid or living room furniture as a wedding gift.
Don Vito Corleone isn't most dads.
On his daughter's wedding day, he's feeling generous, so when Amerigo Bonasera asks him to kill two men who assaulted his (Amerigo's) daughter, Don Corleone agrees to mess 'em up.
For what in return? Nothing…yet.
Don Corelone's response is a thinly veiled threat, letting Bonasera know that he is now in the Godfather's debt. Whatever Corleone asks of him, it won't involve shopping for cannoli.
Where you've heard it
Man oh man, we hope you've never heard this.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
Pretentious or not, you do not want to end up in debt to a mob boss.
