They were renewed by love; the heart of each held infinite sources of life for the heart of the other.
Context
This line is from the novel Crime and Punishment, written by Fyodor Dostoevsky (1866).
Raskolnikov and Sonia aren't villains pursuing Rocky and Bullwinkle, but they're close. One is a killer, one is an ex-prostitute. Imagine an R-rated Rocky and Bullwinkle without the moose and squirrel.
In the book's epilogue, which is so long it has to have chapters of its own, that rascal Raskolnikov is finally able to express his love to Sonia. It's right before he has to spend seven years in jail, so we hope these two are renewed by enough love to last them 84 months.
Where you've heard it
Maybe you've seen this on a list of beautiful sentiments about love. It's certainly lovely enough to make it onto a wedding program, if you try to forget it's about a killer and a prostitute.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
It's not a crime, and you won't spend seven years in jail for it, but if you quote Dostoyevsky, you'll seem pretty pretentious, which is a fair punishment.
