Speaker: The Cast of Cheers

Norm!

Context

This line is spoken by most of the cast in the TV show Cheers (1982-1993).

Cheers is the place "where everybody knows your name." And no one knows that better than Norm Peterson; whenever he walks into the bar, everyone shouts his name in unison. Why? Because he's such a lovable guy.

Although he might want to look into that spending-all-his-time-in-a-bar thing.

Where you've heard it

People probably don't shout "Norm!" when not-Norm walks into a room, but that doesn't mean they can't play on it. Basically, any show where they hang out in a bar is going to get in on the action.

In How I Met Your Mother, the cast starts calling Barney "Swarley," and since they also spend all their time in a bar, when Barney walks in, they pull a "Norm!" and all shout "Swarley!" Doesn't have quite the same ring.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

You can't be pretentious at a Boston bar. It's just not a thing.
